Year 526:
Month of the Tiger:

As the last days of Court are beginning, the Imperial Winter Court is rocked by three announcements. First, the Dragon Champion, Togashi Hiwata, had appeared at the Court, to make a public announcement. The Phoenix also wished to make an announcement, to the Empire and it's Emperor. The Phoenix, going first, state that they have news, from the pen of one Togashi Nakoru to the yojimbo of the Phoenix Champion, that a new Oracle of Water was instated at Aoijiro Oku. Said Oracle had, additionally, said that the monk Gorinno was correct, and the elements were out of balance, and as such, the Oracles were being forced, by the Will of the Heavens, to split to one that could Know, and one that could Act.

This was followed by the entire Imperial Court hearing Hiwata say in shock "This is not what I foresaw!" He refused to make his planned announcement, and gave his apologies, before the entire Dragon contingent decamped early to head for the Mountains.

The Court, and as the news, the Empire, has spoken of these things. New Oracles will be coming! Gorinno is right, and the Heavens have proclaimed it! The Dragon Champion is a Seer - but not a perfect one!

The only other point of interest was the latest Matsu Lady, Matsu Tamako, a cousin of the former daimyos, being formally prevented from attacking the Castle. Unlike any of her predecessors, however, she did not immediately commit seppuku. Instead, as she had been told to do nothing, she announced that, therefore, that is what the Matsu family would do.

Month of the Hare:

Doji Hisato, even before leaving, begins composing his latest novel. With the appearance of the Oracle, it is going to be a very thin veil for what really happened.

As the winter courts were dispersing, the Dragon closed their borders entirely. Merchants, bushi, ambassadors, even other Dragon were not being allowed onto Dragon lands. Instead, delegations of Mirumoto and Togashi monks would meet them, and promise to pass on what they had. The only exceptions to this were Seekers wishing to join the Togashi (and only the true ones; false were prevented), and the ronin Mihiko was allowed entry, to gain healing to her shattered mind and body. Nakoru, as the one noted to have spread the knowledge of what the Oracle said, was met by a delegation. He was granted a single additional tattoo, then ordered to wander the Empire, as ambassador-without-portfolio.

Ikoma Takehiko, as the strongest, staunchest defender of the Lion clan, and the greatest proponent of Gorinno's policy left among those in the Court of Tadaka, was granted much honor among the Lion when he returned. The Ikoma crafted several songs of his deeds, and what they hoped he would do in the future.

Month of the Dragon:

The Fox samurai are put in the unusual situation of having to put down a revolt on their lands. It appeared to rise out of nowhere, and they are unable to find the one that masterminded it, a peasant named Chikako. She claimed to be a prophet, and what little testimony they gained, did perform some form of 'miracles' for the peasants that followed her. When things turned against her nascent army, she disappeared.

Asako Junko is noted for her valor in the defense of her charges, and the guests at the tumultuous Winter Court at Aoijiro Oku. She is held up to the Shiba as the epitome of what a yojimbo could be.

At this time, Shiro Kuni was besieged by a large force of Shadowlands creatures, an army that cut the castle off from any help. The other Crab castles, while not as cut off, were all severely attacked as well, and unable to come to the assistance of the Kuni.

Doji Kinuko has stayed at Aoijiro Oku, and helped to smooth, as best she can, the transition of power. She becomes known in the area, and appreciated by many. She is honored at the Cherry Blossom Festival, with a title granted to her, 'Friend of the Shiba'.

Month of the Serpent:

Shosuro Kurotaka's name is now known to nearly all the Hawk clan members, as he is the only actually acknowledged ambassador rank member of the would-be clan, and even managed to negotiate trade routes for the nascent clan. The rank and file of the Scorpion have expressed desires to hunt him down and put him in the Grove.

As was decided at the Imperial Court, the Emperor's Blessing Heads out to the Mantis isles. There is much work done, and the Mantis seem to appreciate what is done - and especially the food that the Blessing brought with them!

Bayushi Shou, Mizuki, and Kotorin return home. Shou isolates himself in his rooms, sending out only small notes. Mizuki begins to train herself further in the Art of Iaijutsu.

The Matsu Daimyo's strange declaration that the Matsu would do nothing has now been made clear. No Matsu patrol the borders, save if an Akodo personally oversees them. No Matsu patrols the lands, clearing out bandits. No Matsu oversees the ashigaru. No Matsu does anything, save if individually ordered by an Akodo of sufficient rank. This swiftly leads to trouble, as bandits appear on Lion lands in large numbers, beyond what the Ikoma, Akodo, and Kitsu can prevent. And soon enough, Lion lands are frequent sightings of flames, as fighting between bandits, ronin bands, Scorpions, and Ikoma, Akodo, and Kitsu soldiers, covers the area.

Moshi Takayuki goes to Badger lands, with Ichiro Sorahime as do Isawa Haya and Shiba Junko. The Phoenix have come to act as guides and assurances to the young shugenja to be, and Junko receives a trained attack badger. She is... enthralled with her new companion. The female shugenja trainee accompanies the Phoenix back to Kyuden Isawa. Moshi Takayuki gifts a portion of his immense (for a minor-clanner) wealth to the Badger, and is granted a betrothal with Sorahime. Both seem happy with this. The wedding will be in the fall.

Month of the Horse:

The Crane clan suffers minor revolutions from the peasantry in their lands. Nothing that is large, but small ones all over their lands. Scorpion lands, in contrast, and for the first time in years, have no revolts. This might have something to do with the extreme levels of might the Scorpion applied to the revolts in the last year. Doji Shizuka, begins to gain a reputation for her skill in riding her new horse, and delivering important messages, no matter the obstacles. She is granted some small increase in her stipend to allow her to keep her horse at top condition, and begins to receive offers to stud it.

Bayushi Mizuki accepts a challenge offered on behalf of a Togashi Chikako. When she handily defeats the champion of the purported courtier, the woman flees. Investigation shows this was not a Dragon, but the same woman that began the revolt in Fox lands. Scorpions seem spared from any further issues from the villain.

Shiba Nanako's months of campaigning has finally gotten Mia an interview with a high-ranking acolyte of Water, one Isawa Motoko. He seems willing to speak for the girl, but warns that even with her obvious gifts with Water, it will not be a quick procedure to get her entry to the Phoenix. Delays, however, are a fact of life, as the peasantry of the Isawa lands have risen in revolt, due to the knowledge of Elemental Imbalance that has filtered down to their level.

Month of the Goat:

Kuni Watabe finally manages to get a message out, to his friend Gorinno, requesting help. The monk presents it at the summer Imperial Court. None of the major clans are willing or able to send forces, and when Daidoji Yayoi announces he will lead the Imperial Legions, he is almost immediately struck down by an 'arrow from the kami'. Asako Sayuri, present with the Phoenix delegation to deliver some taxes, suggests that the Hawk clan should go, as Gorinno has already pledged the Order of the Five Rings. Such a radical idea is initially met with odd looks. A week later, Shosuro Kurotaka, one of the leading members of the Hawk, at the urging of Shiba Nanako, urges his fellow Hawks to caution. However, Kitsune Ariake, a noted Fox shugenja, manages to convince the other leaders among the Hawk that they should do this, despite Kurotaka's words of warning. Once he realizes he cannot stop it, Kurotaka begins to make plans, and delivers enough provender to support the Hawk forces on their march.

When the Hawks head out to make a name for themselves in the Empire, the Scorpion, having the quietest summer, manage to take advantage of the situation to take over many of the trade routes that Kurotaka had negotiated for.

Bayushi Shou emerges from his isolation, and greets his wife, and scribe, and meet his scribe's new daughter. He finds himself hailed among the Scorpion as a great mastermind and spymaster, as several of the orders and information about the Hawk trade routes came from his house.

Doji Hisato's book is published, and becomes a huge hit throughout the Empire. The words of the Oracle of Water, now in written form, are debated wherever samurai meet.

Month of the Monkey:

As the Emperor's Blessing is returning from the Mantis Isles, it is struck by a storm. The only casualty is Miya Hakuten, lost overboard in the midst of the storm. The Otomo are currently researching the next heir of the family; it is getting hard to find.

The combined forces of the Hawk and Order of the Five Rings work to destroy the attacking Shadowlands forces, and free the heavily damaged Shiro Kuni. Kuni Watabe travels to report to Hida Oshu, but leaves several of his Lieutenants to begin repairs. The Hawk, despite losing the majority of their trade routes, gain much prestige in the Empire, and Kurotaka benefits in his reputation. Except among the Scorpion. Isawa Haya is assigned as junior Ambassador to the Crab.

As the month ends, and fall begins, the Crab declare a celebration at Shiro Kuni, to thank the Fortune's for the victory.

Year 526

Month of the Rooster:
- Togashi Kumako, after working with Haya to repair more temples and shrines in the city for a few weeks, decides to continue wandering the Empire and looking for more Oracles. In her own words ''Well then I'll go around helping heimin and repairing road shrines until I step on an Oracle's foot!''
- Komako grows her theater reputation by beginning a small acting troupe with the support of Shosuro Sayaka. They make a quick tour of Yasuki lands, and she even gets Sayaka to join them on stage.
- Hida Oganamei immerses herself in the Hida training, to the point she begins to lose what she had already learned. This almost obsessive urge to learn the Hida ways still does not garner her the true support of the higher ranking Crab. They accept her - sort of - but are keeping a close eye on the former ronin.
- Kitsune Kenichi stays in Shiro Kuni, working to rebuild the Temple of Jurojin. He works to build it physically, and spiritually.
- Togashi Chikako contemplates the mystery of the Lotus Flower in the Temple of Fukurokujin, and then travels to investigate the even more mysterious Jade Flower Sect, responsible for Jade Petal Tea.

Month of the Dog:
- Doji Hisato writes a pillow book titled "The Darkest Hour". The story of the siege of Shiro Kuni, he manages to minimalize the efforts of the Hawk, even using one as comic relief. Less of a hit than the previous, it still keeps his name in gossip through the empire.
- Shosuro Sayaka begins to sponsor a (small) acting troupe, which begins it's existence by making a quick tour of Yasuki lands, before heading to the Capitol for the winter. Due to the number of parts, and small number of actors, she is swiftly added as a player. She does occasionally seem frazzled, but not impossibly so.
- Orders are dispersed to the entire Empire that Shosuro Sayaka's Travel Papers are no longer to be considered valid.
- Shosuro Kurotaka joins the travels of the acting troupe for safety in the travels, heading to the capitol. He finds it strange that the population of the Yasuki lands seem even more disturbed than most, and he is unable to find any female companionship at all until they reach Otosan Uchi.
- Hida Kamiko is granted the usual reward for a job well done - more work. She continues in her work and studies.
- Togashi Sae, joining Togashi Chikako on the quest, also tries to learn about the mysteries of the Tea. The monks involved are not eager, but a Kuni Witch-Hunter that is waiting on supplies to distribute talks with the pair of Dragon, and seems inclined to do something more. Kuni Tadayoshi leaves for Dragon lands the next day.

Month of the Boar:
- Shosuro Sayaka discovers that her Travel papers have been marked as disallowed by someone high up in the Imperial echelons. She is fortunate enough to be traveling with Shosuro Kurotaka, the Hawk leader, and he is able to get her entire troupe covered with his papers, as 'additional entourage'. This means her plans to travel to anywhere other than the Capitol with him are ended.
- Snow begins early this year, and is deeper and colder than most can remember in their lifetimes. It also comes further south than any can remember, even into the Shadowlands. Peasants are saying it is a sign of the Heaven's Displeasure. Even some samurai, aware of the Oracle of Water's words, begin to speak the same thing.
- As the Temple of Jurojin nears completion, Kitsune Kenichi sets up a small healing clinic in Shiro Kuni.
- Kuni Tadayoshi is allowed to cross the border into Dragon lands.
- Bayushi Kotorin uses her chest of materials from the Kaiu to good effect, studying for a few months, then beginning with construction of a small shed on the lands of the Temple Shou presides over. Her skills begin rudimentary, but she shows real skill with it, and is approved to build a hut for guests next.

Month of the Rat:
- Togashi Nakoru continues his efforts to woo Shiba Tamako. He manages to get the attention of a Nakodo, and has her begin the process for him. However, with the status of the individuals involved, it is clear this will take a while.
- Winter Courts begin. The Imperial Winter court is held in Kyuden Seppun.
- Asako Junko continues to build her impressive reputation as someone who only gets deadlier as a battle goes on. The Inquisitors begin to include her name on their lists of prospective members. It is quickly knocked off, but it is on their minds now.
- From the Capitol, Shosuro Kurotaka uses his connections to get the Hawk accepted as a buffering force between the Lion and Scorpion at Shiro no Meiyo.
- Then, the Troupe formed by Kumako and Sayaka travel by boat to Otosan Uchi. It is not as busy in Otosan Uchi, with the Court gone, but that only allows the small group to make a name for themselves more easily, without as much competition.

Month of the Ox:
- Kuni Sakahara works with the Crane in manners of mercantilism, to the detriment of the Hawk. This also works to get the Crab the Emperor's Blessing. His superiors are very happy with his work.
- Doji Shizuka puts her clan first, and works with Kuni Sakahara to increase the Mercantilism of the Crane and the Crab, to the detriment of the Hawk where possible. She also uses her influence to contribute to the Crab getting the Emperor's Blessing.
- Shiba Nanako manages to gain the attention of an Imperial Nakodo, and is offered as a prospect to the Scorpion as a proven fertile bride. Aside from not marrying into the Yogo, she is a hot prospect, and the Scorpion pay dearly to gain the power of one of the few Water Tensai still in existence. Her wedding will be held the following Winter, to a Soshi.
- Bayushi Mizuki uses her contacts to get Shiba Ineko's betrothal annulled, and the man involved in a marriage to another. She manages to get a Yogo wed to Isawa Aoitaka, as part of the Phoenix; she even uses this as a method to counter the expense of Shiba Nanako joining the Scorpion. Her superiors are pleased with her growing political prowess.
- Asuna, acting as personal shugenja and assistant to Kurotaka, reaches the capitol with him. She seems to have strange contacts that allow her to push his agenda of a buffering zone on an Imperial Level.

Month of the Tiger:
- Ikoma Bansho expands his web of contacts and informants (not that a proper Rokugani would ever call the that!), until it proves too unwieldy for him to control any more. Now, he has to figure out an effective way to deal with this problem.
- Asako Sayuri spends her last winter in the Winter Court of Shiba Moro, at White Oaks. The last major event of the winter is her wedding with Kitsune Ariake, and she moves to Kitsune lands, to work with their libraries there. She is still a frequent letter writer.
- Shiba Ineko, after Mizuki gets her previous betrothal annulled, gets into talks with Nakodo about a marriage into the Scorpion. She has no problems with this, and things are looking good for a marriage into the Bayushi, to a distant cousin of Bayushi Shou's.
- Seppun Mitsue provides a listing of his understanding of the military capabilities of the nascent 'Hawk clan'. While he expected nothing much to come of it, the Jade Champion, Seppun Matoshi, refers to it in Imperial Winter Court, when presenting the idea of having the Hawk provide a buffer zone. Mitsue's name has reached the highest levels of power.
- Amaya continues her walk of the Empire, trying to keep from burdening the islands with another body. She enjoys the winter weather, and begins to gain a reputation for being able to travel the Empire without cease.
- The last act of the Lion is to request a private audience with the Emperor. When they leave, they have permission to attack the Scorpion. The Scorpion immediately begin increasing the manpower and supplies to Shiro no Meiyo.

Year 527

Month of the Hare:
- Hiruma Shogo makes several friends among the Dragon, and they connect him to others in Dragon lands. People cannot cross the border, but letters do. He begins to receive letters from several Togashi, and even a few Agasha.
- Isawa Haya continues to work in the Temples and Shrines, and gains more favor among the Kuni for her efforts. With the shop she scouted out, she gains even more. She continues to work with them, trying to build a true relationship, not just favors, but friendship.
- Spring finds the people of the town around Shiro Kuni used to seeing Kitsune Kenichi and his honey-badger companion leaving in the morning to investigate the newly blossoming plants around the city, and returning in the afternoon.
- Shosuro Sayaka begins discovering that flowers have been left for her each time she performs with her troupe, no matter how small the role, or well-disguised she is.

Month of the Dragon:
- Doji Kinuko works directly with the Kuni to increase the Crab/Crane alliance. While during these talks, it is discovered that Kinuko has a previously undiscovered gift for speaking to the Kami - the Crane never tested her for affinity to the Earth kami. She manages to get her training included into the deal, and receives training as a Kuni Shugenja.
- The Empire seems to be holding it's breath, all along it, waiting for the next step in the Lion/Scorpion conflict. No other conflicts seem to have occurred this spring. Even the troubles in Lion lands are dying down, as the Matsu that are not gathered seem to be re-taking their duties. The Scorpion, remembering what the new Matsu Daimyo proclaimed, take note of this, and hurry more supplies to Shiro no Meiyo.

Month of the Serpent:
- The Lion begin to attack the Vale of the Father and Daughter, completely destroying Shiro Banken. Two more battle come over the next couple weeks.
- Bayushi Shou, after a winter and part of the spring in his labs, comes out triumphant! He has discovered a new method of speaking with the kami. This comes just in time to hear about the invasion of the Vale of the Father and Daughter, one of the most holy sites to the Scorpion, at the end of Spring.
- When the news of the Lion attack on Scorpion lands, at another location than Shiro no Meiyo, reach Kurotaka, he is horrified that his efforts may have lead to the Vale being attacked, and it's sanctity destroyed.
- Kuni Tadayoshi exits Dragon lands, bearing two new tattoos. The borders of the lands have a lessened restriction - but only for a small portion of the Witch-Hunters.
- Small gifts are now being left for Shosuro Sayaka, again, only when she has actually been on-stage.
- Another battle occurs, this one right near the Scorpion camp. For the first time, the Scorpion are able to equal the Lion, though it is not a win for either side.
- Chrysanthemum Festival begins!

Postby Booksnake » Mon Jan 28, 2019 1:47 am

Year 527

Month of the Horse.
-Kingdom of the Crimson founded by the woman named Chikako and her followers in the mountains of the Dragon clan.
-Matsu take Shiro no Meiyo in a brutal and bloody, but swift strike.
-The last will of Hida Oganamei results in some small increase in respect between the Lion and Crab.
-The Hawk, taking advantage of a misspeak by Matsu Eiji, are granted the lands for one week's walk from the Forest of the Dreamers, all of Kaihi province, plus a bit.
-The Mirumoto Daimyo, with Scorpion assistance, sends to Jade Champion for help. He, in turn, summons the Crab, who send the Kaiu Daimyo to lead the force.
-Seppun Haruka, enraged at the actions of Matsu Eiji returns to the capital to help gather resources for the Lion's chastisement.

Month of the Goat
-The Hawk decamp from the region near Shiro no Meiyo. A third head down to the Vale of the Father and Daughter, while the rest head north and west to the new Province they control.
-Hiruma Eriko is betrothed to a minor Otomo functionary.
-During the chaos of the Hawk's move, the Scorpion finish taking control of the trading routes that Kurotaka had initially set up along the North.
-The Scorpion continue to build a castle on the path above the mountains, looking over the Vale. Progress is slow, but the foundation is set.

Month of the Monkey
-The Hawk forces in the Vale begin work to purify it from the Touch of the Dark Oracle of Water, lead by Asuna.
-Naoko begins to rebuild the castle of Shiro Banken, with Doji Mataichi's assistance.
-The summer had been exceptionally hot throughout it's last part, and even bandits were at a low ebb.
-The Hawk in Kaihi province do a swift reconaissance of the area, and settle near the largest village. Shosuro Kurotaka argues that the Castle of Gathering Winds would be the best place to rebuild for a headquarters for the clan of Air - it's name is definitely a sign! The others present agree after a bit of debate.
-The Hawk in the Vale discover that the 'spooky forest' has returned to normal, and is just an area of woods now. It is still mostly avoided.

Month of the Rooster
-Kaiu forces, with some help from the Scorpion, have completely destroyed the maho tsukai that infested Dragon lands, and invested a siege to take the Castle the Crimson Kingdom have raised so quickly.
-Naka Tsuke appears at the border of Dragon lands, and calls for his apprentice to be brought to him. When questioned, it is learned he has called the ronin Mihiko, now recovered from her ordeal. She does not look surprised when told of the news. The pair leave shortly, and scouts following lose track of them soon.
-Shiba Moro is pleased to inform his champion of yet another Silver strike on the edge of his lands! The Phoenix have a surfeit of silver, and begin to use it carefully for other uses, especially in trading to the Crane as Artisan supplies.
-Miya Satoichi dies in public, choking to death on a bite of rice and eggs. The Otomo, having planned ahead, already have the next 3 names ready for the Emperor to choose from.

Month of the Dog
-Miya Otoyo is named the new Daimyo of the Miya, and the Imperial Herald. He appears publically overwrought with the honor. If one was less than polite, one might almost say he was terrified.
-Suzume Junpei, on a patrol around the lands of the Sparrow, discovers an Oni, and Drawing on his Rage, destroys it utterly. A nearby traveling merchant, who had been menaced by the monster, claims he can send someone who might be able to help Junpei learn to channel his rage.
-Togashi Hou has spent months working in the Dragon clan, to bring the sides advocating for the '5 Rings, 5 Clans' philosophy and those against it. The clan seems to have come to a consensus that it is probably wrong, but they are open to learning it might be correct.
-Though still not repaired enough to withstand a siege, the Castle of Gathering Winds is now capable of holding the northern branch of the Hawk for the winter in semi-comfort. Some of those that came here begin to train together, forming a melding of techniques, and what they hope will be the Hawk's school when it is declared a clan.

Month of the Boar
-The Phoenix, having learned of what happened to the Dragon, send the suffering clan almost half of their food surplus, instead of saving it for Winter Court trades. Shiba Imo is assigned to this, as one of those that advocated it. This alleviates the Dragon's food problems to a large extent, allowing the clan to get through the Winter with far fewer deaths than the last few years.
-After the Phoenix clan's gift, Hou wakes one morning to discover someone in his room. It is Togashi Hiwata, who interrogates the younger man, then shared a secret with him. This secret so shocked him, he forgot to ask his questions of the Champion.
-The Emperor travels to Kyuden Doji to hold winter court. Some wonder why he goes so soon. It is rumored one of the Otomo Astrologers suggested it.
-Doji Naoto attends Winter Court at Aoijiro Oku
-Doji Mataichi is instrumental in setting up patrols around the Vale, and leads the one that chases off a small group of bandits. While others celebrate the skirmish, he makes sure that the next patrol is moving.

Month of the Rat
-Tenmou returns from the Dragon lands having helped stop the maho tsukai forces there. She could care less about the Crimson Kingdom. She shares some of her observations, and the clan leadership, particularly in the Shosuro, pay great attention.
-Hida Battul, finally given leave, travels to Phoenix lands, where he returns the daisho of Asako Otoha to her family, along with the remains of the Emperor's Writing kit.
-Shosuro Kurotaka, after making plans with Bayushi Iwa, begins traveling to the Imperial Winter Court, under an Imperial Invitation.
-The Lion learn of the taxes they owe as a result of Haruka's maneuvers, discover the amount much higher than they had expected. When a request is made to discover why, they find they are covering their own, and all that the Hawk might have owed - the Lion are the last clan acknowledged to be responsible for those provinces and are expected to provide their profit without exception.
-The winter starts normally, but a sudden surge of warm weather causes a great deal of rain to come, instead of snow, leading to ice forming. Things are hard all across the middle of the Empire, though in the North, it's worse, as the weight of the water caused avalanches throughout Dragon and Phoenix lands.

Month of the Ox
-The Lion promote Ikoma Bansho to Sensei, to pass on his learning to the next generation. He takes the rest of the winter to begin working on taking the lesson's he has himself learned, trying to figure out how to draw all the pieces together to a cohesive whole.
-The Scorpion, after a month of fairly normal politicking at Winter Court, go silent. The other clans get worried.
-Shosuro Sayaka has been in the Crab winter court, attempting to bring further rapprochement between the Hawk and the Crab. Though many are unwilling, as other clans have pushed the Crab more toward the middle of the line, the Kuni are solidly for it. The Kuni daimyo has made his position clear, and none of his people can honorably move against him.
-Shiba Moro, along with many in Aoijiro Oku, is struck to his bed by illness. The castle has difficulty functioning, as the last shipment of foodstuffs for the winter was stopped by the avalanches blocking it's way.
-Winter weather continues to be alternating periods of normal cold, and warm periods. While the warmth is pleasant, the effects can be anything but on occasion. Some take this as further proof of the Elements being out of alignment.
-Moshi Risa starts a new sisterhood among the Centipede. At present it is small, only 4 members, but the public announcement is that they are focused on worshiping the other Fortunes, not just Lady Sun.

Month of the Tiger
-As winter is ending, Yasuki Takara begins lobbying those in power to start studying at the Hida bushi school. Takara's sensei, though agreeing privately that it is a good fit, slows the process down.
-Doji Hatsumi manages to get her marriage annulled by leaving the Crane and joining the Hawk. At first her husband is resistant. She has no idea why her husband, after months of acrimonious actions, suddenly agrees - though she has some suspicions.
-The Scorpion, on the last days of Winter Court, announce that those from the Scorpion that Join the Hawk Clan will not be held as necessarily wrong, but they must make a choice. They must return to the Scorpion, or admit they are no longer Scorpion, and give up their Family names. Those who refused to do so will potentially risk engaging in duels against members of the Scorpion. Hantei makes no objection to this. The Crane begin to debate doing the same, but make no such announcement.
-Though unable to make many strong allies at Winter Court, Kurotaka kept his name, and the Hawk clan, at the forefront, and provided a face for them. For many there, this was the first chance to meet a Hawk who isn't always acrimonious. He does adroitly avoid any challenges and duels, and even survives an assassination attempt on his life.
-The Hida Champion unexpectedly expels the monk Gorinno from Crab lands, but makes no other move against him or his followers.

Year 528

Month of the Hare
-Nakoru's tea shop, after a very difficult winter, gets a visit from Doji Shizuka, who infuses the shop with more koku, and takes the former Dragon aside for some tips in how to best balance his time. The shop begins to pick up a little.
-The peasants of Kaihi province, instead of rice, plant a mix of barley and cotton. They are, understandably to them, displeased with this change away from self-sustaining crops, but have no choice. There is considerable unrest, but it does not break into violence.
-Within the Fox clan the position of Chief Karo to the Fox Champion is filled by Kitsune Sayuri. Her consistent and persuasive philosophical attacks on the Hawk philosophy helped earn her notoriety among many of her new clansmen. On her suggestion the Fox begin to actively engage in historical research and education initiatives with the intent of instructing their clansmen and their allies on the spiritual and historical significance of both the Minor and Great Clans.
-As he returns home from Kyuden Doji, the Emperor is attacked by the Dark Oracle's champion, Maou (formerly Shosuro Ogai). Many Seppun Guard lose their lives fighting off the Taint empowered foe, but the Emperor is kept safe. As word of the attack and his escape crosses Rokugan, many offerings are made to the Fortunes for his safety.
-Naoto is surprised to be granted an audience with Dogen, abbot of the Temple of Osano Wo, who thanks her for her efforts. Because of her own words adding to his, Gorinno has been expelled from Crab lands.
-Junpei is greeted by a man who says he will help him learn to channel the Rage he now feels. He takes another step on his own dark journey.

Month of the Dragon
-Word of the unrest from the northern Hawk is heard by those in the Vale, and many among the southern Hawk place the blame for the slow progress of their castle on Kurotaka's shoulders and the economic innovations of Kaihi province.
-Yogo Tenmou, after a winter of work, travels to Phoenix lands, to meet with the nascent Inquisitors. Their talks, private ones, are unwatched by any, even the elemental kami.
-The Imperial Court begins to press the Emperor to marry and have children, that the succession won't be in doubt. The current heir is an Otomo.
-Infighting between the Fortunist and the Taoist monks begins to become bitter and physical, and has spread throughout the Empire.
-Moshi Sorahime, heading out into the mountains of the Centipede to meditate and commune with the kami, accidently discovers a small cavern. Further exploration leads to the discovery it is a small silver mine.

Month of the Serpent
-After a year of work, Asuna has blessed as much of the Vale as she can, and begins construction on a Shrine at the location of the last battle.
-The Emperor, after a month of (very careful and polite) badgering, agrees to get married. He does demand a choice of at least four, and up to 8 eligible maidens. The Crane agree.
-Kakita Wayozu is named as new Senior Sensei of the Kakita Academy. She is the first non-Kenshinzen so named.
-Kurotaka scrambles after he is handed a child, with a wet-nurse, and informed it is his. None of the Hawk are surprised at this.
-After years of delays, the Monastery of the 5 Rings is completed. It stands on the other side of the Spine mountains from the Hawk lands in Kaihi, not far from the winding Seikitsu pass.

Month of the Goat
-Hiruma Eriko, with her marriage to Otomo Nerumo, become Otomo Eriko; she is granted a position as the most junior Jade Yoriki to a Jade Magistrate. And Shiba Imo marries Hida Jinbo into the Phoenix clan.
-Heavy attacks along the Crab lands and the collapse of the most prosperous mine means that Jade has become a rare commodity.
-Shiro Banken has been returned to livable status, and Taka becomes it's governor. Doji Mataichi has built a home just outside it, the first home built in the Vale by a Hawk that is permanent, not temporary. It is only a few rooms, but it is his, and his alone. Others see it as further sign that the Hawk are making a more permanent mark in the world.
-Daidoji Yayoi, Emerald Champion, having mostly recovered from his earlier striking down from the Fortunes, is struck down again. He retains life, but the shugenja are not optimistic about how much he might recover. Lobbying begins for the Emperor to hold another Emerald Championship. The Emperor resists.
-The bitter in fighting between the different sects of the Brotherhood begin to have a greater impact on many of the Minor Clans who share close ties with the monks. Many of them become increasingly wary of the Philosophy of the Five Rings, fearing that the consolidation of clans into fewer numbers is potentially problematic for they who live on the fringes. Many of the Minor Clans send representatives to meet with the Fox's historical expert, Kitsune Sayuri, in the capital to discuss the potential threat and/or benefits of the Five Rings Philosophy.
-Rumors about Kurotaka are swirling throughout the southern portion of the Hawk. He is lucky enough to have previous efforts pay off, and makes sure that all Hawk get at least one set of clothing, in black. It is all sturdy, but serviceable, and all is new. For some of the Hawk, this is the first new clothing they have ever had. Somehow, it does little to stop the rumors in the southern portion of the Hawk.
-Hida Battul is assigned to a post in a somewhat more . . . political setting. He has been assigned to a post in Otosan Uchi.

Month of the Monkey
-Nakoru hears back from the Nakodo. While marriage to Shiba Tamako is still possible, it is very difficult with his drop in status. He will need to prove himself in the near future, do something to keep himself in the running. The fact he now has two children by his pair of concubines, doesn't help his case. However, he has a few others through the Empire that have passed on their hopes for the marriage, which is what convinces the Nakodo to continue her efforts.
-After months of fighting, Emperor Hantei orders that any monks caught fighting within the bounds of Otosan Uchi are to be exiled from it, not to return. Their place is not to be fighting each other!
-The Crab begin to work more closely with the Jade magistrates, assigning young members to assist them. Both Hiruma and Kaiu are sent.
-The Crane offer five of their most eligible maidens. They found themselves a little tight of choices, due to timing, and though each has impeccable connections and family lineage, they are not all what you would consider the picture of Doji Maidenhood.
-Otosan Uchi Game!

-Gorinno arrives in Otosan Uchi. He is welcomed and sought after by the crowds. Doji Toriageru spends a couple days in close consultation with the man.
-The Order of the 5 Rings, acting as monks, send a contingent to the Hawk lands in Kaihi province. The Hawk there are those that are most agitated by Kurotaka's actions.
-Seppun Samishi, acting as commander, leads an Imperial Legion to southern Hawk lands. He and his men are greeted by the clan with cheer and good wishes. The Seppun sent with a contingent to northern Hawk lands is less eagerly welcomed.

-Togashi Chikako arrives at Dragon lands. She wakes up the morning before crossing the border to find Togashi Hou is gone. When she asks, the border guards say he woke, walked towards the Dragon lands, then there was a flare of fire, and he seemed to 'dissipate'. They credited it to his Togashi abilities. She keeps the what she thinks happened to herself.
-Yobanjin raids continue even as snow is falling, costing several Phoenix cities difficult winters, with much loss of life.

Month of the Ox
-A book is released at Winter Courts across the land, including the Imperial one. It is focusing on the adventures of a Miya taisa in the Imperial Legions, as he seeks romance while putting down peasant and monk revolts. The Miya in question is very strong and regularly appears topless, performing amazing deeds. The foes he encounters are predominantly blindly obsessed five ring believers/followers causing trouble.
-At the northern Hawk lands, trouble occurs several times over the course of the winter. Though none are killed, blood was spilled, and tempers are running high on both sides.
-Seppun Haruka finally gives in to the nearly unrelenting blandishments of Samishi, and agrees to a betrothal. It still takes the Nakodos a month to work things out.

-In a surprise move, the Emperor orders that His Blessing will go to help the Centipede in the next year.

529
Month of the Hare
-Bayushi Shou comes out of his workshop, after a winter seclusion. When the higher-ups in the Scorpion come, wondering at his new spell, he looks at them blankly. He was working on something else. He does share news of how the Yogo curse was removed from him and his bloodline, and is summoned by Yogo Mariko for debriefing immediately she learns of it.
-Soshi Nanako visits him, and they converse for several days before she heads out on pilgrimage.
-Isawa Mia gains a position as a yoriki to an Emerald Magistrate in the Brutal Flame district.
-Using her contacts, Kitsune Sayuri gets the former Boar lands assigned as tax exempt estate with duties to provide lumber for the building and renovation of shrines and temples in the empire. Peasants and ronin are gathered to be settled by those willing to reside in such haunted lands. Hino is given a position as a jito (a sheriff of a landed estate) and helps run the council that sees to the day to day affairs of the estate.
-Kakita Yuzuriha returns to Crane lands, where she searches for ears willing to hear her message, finding several malcontent members of her foreign clan who have begun to doubt the powers that be within the empire to make the proper decision.
-The underworld of Otosan Uchi is shook, as a new figure is seen as responsible for nearly half of the Outer City, in a meteoric rise in power and influence.

Month of the Dragon
-The Emperor weds Doji Kanekoshiko in Kyuden Bayushi. The Empire celebrates.
-Rumors of a new player in the underside of Otosan Uchi begin to circulate.
-During the celebration of the Wedding, there are riots throughout the Scorpion lands. None know what caused them, and they are put down brutally. This is carefully kept from the Imperial Party, though the Scorpion spread word it is caused by 5 Rings monks, when spreading such would be to their advantage.
-The fifth Golden Lotus is opened by Doji Shizuka.
-Seppun Mitsue uses tactics his subordinates scoff at (making friends with other tribes than the war-like one), but they obey his orders.
-Shosuro Kurotaka publishes a treatise. It is distributed throughout Hawk lands by the same channels as the clothing they are still receiving from his efforts. It notes that while there might be some use from the Hawk philosophy, the current set-up and leadership are impossibly wrong. This results in several of the Hawk, of Crane and Ronin orders, leaving, and returning to their previous lives. Those that stay are now the hardest believers.

Month of the Serpent
-A scandalous book is published, that has a non-human as the main character. It is interacting with an empire that is similar to, but different from, Rokugan. It ends with a Star falling in the capitol of that empire, and destroying it.
-After months of work, and trying to get close to the Imperials that are watching them, Taka and Asuna are the acknowledged leaders of the southern branch of the Hawk. Taka, however, has been tainted by association with Kurotaka, while Asuna is seen as less so, from her clashes with him. She is the unofficial leader of the southern branch, and the only Shugenja that lives there. Taka, though the given leader, is not viewed as highly among the Hawk as once he was. It is through their efforts (though most accredited it to Asuna) that the southern branch of the Hawk stays together, after Kurotaka's attacks sent shockwaves through Hawk ranks.
-Using his new contacts and power, Uraki reveals the fact of the Scorpion stealing supplies meant for the production of jade petal tea from Hiruma Sadae, and the Crab. Conditions between the two clans worsen considerably as the Crab are insulted by the theft, and fear that the Scorpion are hiding something potentially concerning.

Month of the Goat
-Asuna is noted to be teaching an apprentice she has found, the first Hawk to learn as a Hawk.
-New One-Tattooed Togashi monks have appeared. Their tattoos are either related to a single animal - or an element. The differences aren't obvious to non-Dragons, and even to some non-Togashi.
-Doji Toriageru publishes a treatise on the Five Rings philosophy. It is a little dry, and somewhat technical, but still sells well, as both sides get copies of it, to study and either implement, or try to tear apart.
-A fire breaks out in Otosan Uchi. The only casualty seems to be the business Petals on the Wind, a geisha house that burns to the ground. Most of the girls escape, but the star of the house, Akenohoshi, is killed in the fire.
-Mitsue's unconventional tactics are successful, as, with the aid of a couple of the friendlier tribes, he manages to destroy the majority of the most war-like tribe. About a third of it, however, escape, upon the backs of wyrms.

Month of the Monkey
-Togashi Chikako arrives at the northern Hawk lands, but finds little welcome. She moves quickly across the mountains to the monastery. She is welcomed with trepidation for a few weeks as she is introduced to the teachings.
-Bayushi Kotorin is noted, by those few that note her, to be pregnant again. This news is mostly lost to the news that the Empress is also now pregnant. The Empire celebrates again.
-Suzume Gacho, Champion of the Sparrow, is struck down in an accident while sparring. His son, who is only 8, is given a regent to run the clan till he is ready.
-A new group is acknowledged by the Crane leadership, particularly Daidoji Kisami. The Daidoji Trading Council, brought into being by Daidoji Hiromasa and Doji Shizuka, is formed to counter the sudden strength of the Scorpion/Dragon economic Alliance.
-As Crab animosity rises towards the Crane-Scorpion bloc, from her new position, Doji Shizuka works to minimize the issues between the Crab and Crane, so as to prevent a war from breaking out. She is somewhat successful in diverting the Crab's rage from the Crane, but conditions continue to worsen between the Crab and Scorpion.

Month of the Rooster
-Bayushi Utagawa and Shosuro O-Shihime are married in a lavish wedding in Brutal Flame district.
-The Shadowlands sends more waves of attackers, but the Hawk send a force down south again, who assist in trying to crush it. They are noted as enthusiastic, but only slightly more useful than a Crane might be. Well, a non-Daidoji Crane. The Hawk liaison is Hida Josuke, who is now a Jade Magistrate.
-Chikufasa arrives at the monastery of 5 Rings, and things change. Togashi Chikako is taught the basics on how to access information locked within special mandala by Chikafusa. She learns that there is indeed a great imbalance in the Empire and the elements are calling for some form of reorganization of the political order. She is unwilling to leave the Dragon, however, and therefore becomes unable to continue her training and learn more from her experiences. The monks that are more... belligerent and unfriendly to visitors like her, are sent out into the world, to teach, while those that are more scholarly stay to instruct interested pilgrims.

Month of the Dog
-Ikoma Koganehime begins building a dojo, subsidized by Ikoma Bansho. She quietly announces it will be called Honor's Sacrifice Dojo, with Bansho as the first Sensei. Few outside the Lion care.
-Border clashes occur along the Lion/Crane border, to no change.
-Yohihotsu, the daimyo of the Mantis passes away. It is not a surprise to anyone. He is succeeded by his son, Yorito.
-An attendant to the Master of Fire, Isawa Hikari, acquires a collection of ancient mandala from the libraries in the capital and has them moved to Kyuden Isawa for research. Many monks from the Shintao sects of the Brotherhood begin to travel to Kyuden Isawa to inspect them, leading to an increased presence of Five Ring adherents in the region. Many powerful individuals within the Phoenix begin to express their opinions that the Five Rings philosophy has substance and lend their support to its efforts.

Month of the Boar
-Earthquakes in Crab lands collapse the two most prominent Jade mines. The price of the precious mineral soars.
-Hino, and the other nascent Boar, take this summer's chance, as advised by both Sayuri and Shizuka, independently, to mine the lands of the Lost Boar. They deliver a chest of Jade to the Imperial bureaucracy.
-Kasuga Shinaiko notifies the Nakodo to step up efforts to find her a spouse.
-Kakita Yuzuriha leaves Crane lands for the last time as a Crane. Instead, she heads to Scorpion lands. She and Shosuro Kurotaka are married in Shiro no Shosuro. She does bring with her a list of contacts among the Crane - those of a more 'worldly' bent. The Kolat are pleased.

Month of the Rat
-Due to the 6 month pregnant status of the Empress, the Imperial Winter court is held at Kyuden Otomo.
-Phoenix push for the now one year vacant position of Jade Champion to be removed.
-Gorinno, at the Imperial Winter Court, stymies several attempts to get the Scorpion Champion's daughter married to persons other than Crane.
-Kurotaka, as the Shosuro second-in-command, in a move many find odd, spends the winter in Otosan Uchi.
-Otosan Uchi is subjected to an Earthquake. The only casualty of note is the governor Tenari, and his brand new estate, which is destroyed.

Month of the Ox
-Kurotaka, in Otosan Uchi, is seen to be friendly with one of the recent passers of their Gempukku, a boy (now man) who took the name Seppun Santoru.
-Seppun Yasunori, rotated back to Otosan Uchi from southern Hawk lands, where he had been serving under Samishi, is instrumental on leading raids that clear the capitol city of Bloodspeaker cells. The Emerald Magistrate that works with him is none other than Doji Kumihime. Both find that an attraction occurs.
-After a fire breaks out in the original Golden Lotus, the manager, the ronin Nakoru, goes on Pilgrimage. This despite that he was due to marry the governor Shiba Tamako in only a few months time. Doji Shizuka has the building rebuilt, and new staff brought in.
-Mia, once a ronin, then an Isawa, now becomes a Yogo, as she weds Yogo Ujihiro, one of the top researchers under Mariko. The Scorpion hope that she will bring unique insights into said research. She brings her bear along.

Month of the Tiger
-At the recommendation of his wife, Hantei announces there will be new Jeweled Championships held the following summer. Not just one, but he is retiring, honorably, the stricken Daidoji Yayoi. So, both will be held!
-The servants are going to tell Daidoji Yayoi the news, when they discover he has passed away. A funeral is quickly held.
-The Phoenix are angered by this ignoring of their efforts, and leave before the paths of winter have cleared.
-Seppun Yasunori among the items confiscated from his raids, is a map that he thinks might lead to a cure for his, and others, unnatural aging. However, the map is obscure, in several cyphers, and he can't immediately figure out the landmarks along the way.
-Bayushi Kotorin gives birth to twins. She almost dies, but Yogo Mia, the former Isawa Mia, visiting the family at the time, is able to call on the water kami to keep her alive.

530
Month of the Hare
-Bayushi Shou challenges Mizuki's half-sister Okimi for her actions. She attempts to use her contacts to prevent it, only to find he and Mizuki (and Kotorin) spent the last year drying those up. Mizuki wins the duel with Okimi's champion. Megumi, the other half-sister, makes her escape, becoming named a ronin.
-The Empress gives birth to a baby boy just before the party returns to Otosan Uchi, delaying the return trip.
-Gorinno makes another trip to Otosan Uchi.
-Otomo Eriko, scouting on her new horse, when she reports on the ambush that Maou had been preparing. The Imperial Guard counter-Ambush, and kill most of his followers, but the enhanced being again escapes. Eriko is noted by the Emperor himself, and promoted to Jade Magistrate, then assigned a pair of Yoriki. One is older, clearly the one that will do the footwork. The second is a young Seppun, one Santoru by name, to give him experience.

Month of the Dragon
-Phoenix presence throughout the Empire is increased. They seem to be exploring all avenues of... something.
-Kurotaka is shocked to discover he isn't the only high-prestige person to be meeting with Santoru. The other, who has been tutoring him, is non-other than Gorinno!
-Maou leads an attack on Crane lands. Several of the most prominent duelists are killed in the fighting.
-After months of negotiations, Doji Kumihime and Seppun Yasunori are betrothed. Kumihime will join the Seppun family.
-After seeming to disappear a year earlier, Hou reappears, this time to the searching Soshi Nanako. He is not able to help her directly, but tells her two paths she could follow. One would cure her, the other her daughter. She does not hesitate to follow the northern route that would help her daughter, instead of the southern one that might help herself.

Month of the Serpent
-The Council of Masters begin calling in all debts owed them. The best and brightest shugenja are now, due to honor, going to be unable to challenge for the position of Jade Champion. The Shiba are incensed at this activity, seeing it as dishonorable.
-Seppun Samishi returns to Otosan Uchi, where he is married to Seppun Haruka.
-The Jade and Emerald Championships occur!
